WHAT IS THE SAFE AND SOUND LISTENING PROTOCAL?
The SSP is a guided listening program developed from decades of research examining the relationship between the auditory system, nervous system regulation, and social engagement. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and grounded in polyvagal theory, the program is designed to help children and adults feel more at ease within themselves and in the world around them by supporting the nervous system's ability to regulate and respond to the environment.
Research and clinical experience have demon-strated improvements in areas such as:
-
Emotional regulation and behavioral organization
-
Auditory and sensory sensitivities
-
Social engagement and communication
-
Attention, listening, and participation
-
Stress resilience and nervous system regulation
-
Sleep, digestion, and other stress-related challenges in some individuals
While outcomes vary from person to person, many families report that as their child's nervous system becomes more regulated, everyday activities become easier to navigate and parti-cipation in home, school, and community life improves.
HOW DOES THE SSP WORK?
The SSP uses electronically filtered music designed to highlight sound frequencies important for human communication. As the nervous system processes these sounds, it receives cues associated with safety and social engagement through pathways connected to the vagus nerve—a key regulator of emotional regulation, stress responses, sensory processing, and connection with others.
As nervous system regulation improves, many individuals find it easier to remain calm during everyday challenges, recover from stress, engage in learning, navigate sensory experiences, and participate more comfortably in relationships and daily activities. Listening sessions are introduced gradually and tailored to each person's responses, allowing the program to support the nervous system at a pace that feels comfortable and manageable.
WHO MIGHT BENEFIT FROM THE SSP?
Research and clinical experience have shown that the Safe and Sound Protocol can be helpful for children and adults experiencing a variety of challenges related to regulation, sensory processing, communication, attention, and social engagement.
Families often seek support because their child seems to be working harder than expected to navigate everyday experiences, connect with others, or participate successfully at home, school, and in the community. While every child is unique, many children who benefit from the program experience challenges in one or more of the following areas:
Regulation
- Frequent meltdowns or emotional outbursts
- Difficulty calming down after becoming upset
- Anxiety, worry, or a tendency to remain on high alert
- Strong reactions to unexpected changes or transitions
- Chronic physical tension, poor sleep, or stress-related digestive concerns
- Sensory overwhelm from noise, busy environments, or everyday experiences
Connection
- Difficulty making eye contact or engaging in back-and-forth interactions
- Challenges reading social cues, facial expressions, or tone of voice
- Feeling uncomfortable or withdrawn in social situations
- Difficulty building or maintaining peer relationships
- Challenges with communication, engagement, or shared attention
Participation
- Difficulty focusing, following directions, or staying engaged in activities
- Challenges participating comfortably at home, school, or in the community
- Becoming overwhelmed in learning environments
- Difficulty adapting to routines, transitions, or new experiences
- Anxiety or sensory challenges that interfere with everyday activities
COULD THE SSP BE A GOOD FIT FOR YOUR CHILD?
GETTING STARTED
The first step in considering the Safe and Sound Protocol is a complimentary consultation. This gives us an opportunity to talk about your child's strengths, challenges, and needs; answer your questions; and explore whether SSP may be a good fit for your family.
If you would like to move forward after our conversation, I will send you a brief clinical screening form. Once I have reviewed that information and confirmed that SSP is appropriate for your child, we can complete enrollment and scheduling.
